Kia Ora…

This site is divided between my two radio passions, broadcast DX and ham DX.
My interest in radio began in 1970 when I took an unhealthy shine to electricity and radio. I discovered DXing in 1974 and things snowballed from there. First as a broadcast listener, eventually gaining a ham licence in 1983. These days, I am very active on the ham bands and as far as broadcast DXing goes, am more involved in administration matters and do very little listening.

I’ve been active on HF as ZL4PW since September 2003, previously on VHF since 1983 as ZL4TFX).

Other calls – ZM4M (Contest call), ZL4M (OC-203 Stewart Island, March 2010), ZM4PW, ZL4RUGBY and /P variants. Also part of ZM90DX group celebrating 90th anniversary of first ZL-GB contact and YJ0X Vanuatu October 2014.

Decided to go HF after plenty of help, advice and encouragement from my good mates Bill, W0WOI and Stan ZL4OW.

My equipment consists of an Elecraft K3 rig, KPA500 linear and KAT500 tuner, kenwood TS-2000 (doubles for MW/SW DXing), a 3 element SteppIR at 8m high, a 7-el YU7EF 6m beam at 7m, and a “43-footer” vertical for 30 – 160mb.  I have recently established a remote site, please see the Waianakarua pages.

I’m much more a DXer than a rag-chewer, so you’ll find me mostly on the DX-scene. I chase new entities, IOTA, special prefixes etc. and am a keen contester.

  2. Hi Paul, tnx for QSO today 07:52 UTC on 12m. Great signal in DL. It was a new DXCC on 12 for me 😉 Mny 73 to the other side of the world, de Dirk, DL5DCL

  3. You caught 43 U.S. states on MW from New Zealand? Outstanding! It’s not a simple matter for locals because of the huge number of stations bashing each other about. Maybe some distance actually helps 😉
